Plot summary
Beneath the surface of Trinia, generations of human slaves mine crystals for Zygon, the god they serve. Young miner Orin discovers a jeweled sword embedded in the rock, and its blade shows an image of an old man who speaks of a magnificent universe above the caverns. The blade then vanishes, leaving only the hilt, and Orin and his girlfriend Elan decide to find that universe and the blade. Orin digs his way to Trinia's surface and bonds with a mysterious Starfly. Man-Droids seize him to use his body parts in place of their own, but the hilt produces an invisible blade and he escapes. He then meets Dagg Dibrimi, a human smuggler who does not believe that slaves live in the mines.

- Production on Starchaser began in 1982 aiming for a 1983 release, but problems with the 3D process delayed it by two years and pushed the budget from a planned $2 million to $6 million.
- Starchaser is identified as the world's first full-length animated project made in the 3D format, though the earlier Abra Cadabra (1983) was also produced in 3D.
- To turn the film's computer animation into something animators could draw over, a digital plotter transferred the CGI to paper, which had never been done in animation before.
- Animator Steven Hahn decided during the off-season to make a feature film to give his South Korean animation studio something to work on, and Jeffrey Scott wrote Escape to the Stars as its foundation.
