Plot summary
The death of Associate Justice Stanley Moorehead leaves a seat on the United States Supreme Court, and the president's choice is Ruth Loomis, a conservative from Orange County, California, confirmed as the first woman to sit on the court. She joins Daniel Snow, a committed liberal with many years on the bench, and the two disagree on nearly every judicial question that comes before them. One case concerns a pornographic film and arguments about freedom of speech. Another case, appealed from a lower court, involves Omnitech International's stockholders and a possible new source of power, a momentum engine, whose patent the company's board controls; its chief executive, Donald Richards, has not been seen publicly in ten years and cannot be served with a subpoena.
