Plot summary
A tramp steamer docks in New York harbor in the years before Prohibition, and its coal stokers shut down the furnaces ahead of a night ashore. The third engineer, Andy, tells the exhausted crew they will face punishment if they come back drunk. At a saloon called The Sandbar, Andy runs into Lou, his estranged wife, who has spent his three years away as a regular there. Bill Roberts, a stoker who brawls on leave, pulls a drowning prostitute, Mae, from the water and carries her to a room above the saloon, where Lou revives her. Bill brings Mae a drink and a dress taken from a pawn shop next door and asks her to spend the evening with him. She accepts, and when Andy tries to cut in downstairs, Bill drives him off with his fists.
