Plot summary
Stella Maris was born paralyzed and cannot walk. Her wealthy guardians, Aunt Julia and Sir Oliver Blount, keep her in a London mansion and hold the world's unhappiness away from her; she does not know a war is being fought or that people go hungry. John Risca, a journalist, visits the house often. He married Louise six years ago, and the two are unhappy together, but Stella believes he is unmarried. Louise takes in Unity Blake, an orphan who has known deprivation and cruelty all her life and who fears everyone. Sent out one night for groceries, Unity loses the food to children and comes back to a beating from Louise.
