Plot summary
Lieutenant Vladimir Dubrovsky of the Imperial Guard rescues Mascha and her aunt when their stagecoach runs away, and the deed brings him to the attention of Czarina Catherine II. She offers him a general's rank, then tries to seduce him; he refuses and leaves the court, and she sets a price on his head. A letter from his father reports that the nobleman Kyrilla Troekouroff has taken the family lands and is terrorizing the countryside. Vladimir reaches home to find his father dead, takes the name and black mask of the Black Eagle, and vows to avenge him and aid Kyrilla's victims. Mascha is Kyrilla's daughter, and Vladimir steps into the role of a French tutor expected at the estate but never seen, so that he can live inside the Troekouroff household.
