Eugene Pallette

Biography

Eugene Pallette was an American actor who appeared in more than 240 productions from 1913 to 1946. Born in Winfield, Kansas, he began on the stage in stock company roles, then entered silent movies as an extra and stunt man. He worked with D. W. Griffith on The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916). After gaining weight, he became a character actor known for gruff, down-to-earth roles. In sound films, he played the comically exasperated family patriarch in My Man Godfrey (1936), The Lady Eve (1941), and Heaven Can Wait (1943), a cynical insider in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and a police sergeant in several Philo Vance mysteries, among them The Kennel Murder Case (1933). His best-known role may have been the Friar Tuck of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), with a similar part as Fray Felipe in The Mark of Zorro (1940). His final film was Suspense (1946), and he died in 1954.
