Plot summary
On a baby farm deep in an alligator-infested swamp, a group of children, most of them orphans, are set to work in the garden and go hungry. Mr. Grimes crushes the head of the doll one mother sends her child and throws it into the swamp. Molly, the oldest of them and an adolescent herself, tries to give the little ones the care of a mother, and she tells them to hide whenever a visitor comes. When a hog buyer arrives, Ambrose, the Grimes' son, keeps Splutters from hiding. Molly has promised the younger children that God will rescue them, and when one boy asks why no rescue has come, she says that God is busy with sparrows.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sparrows (1926)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Mary Pickford said she had to carry a real baby rather than a doll through water full of alligators in Sparrows, and that director William Beaudine was putting the actors at risk. Cinematographer Hal Mohr debunked it, saying no alligator came within ten miles of her.
- Art director Harry Oliver built the film's Gothic swamp on four acres of the back lot between Willoughby Avenue and Alta Vista Street, transplanting 600 trees and filling dug pits with burned cork, sawdust and muddy water.
- Sparrows was Mary Pickford's next-to-last silent role; she followed it with My Best Girl in 1927, then made some talking pictures before retiring to her Pickfair estate with her husband Douglas Fairbanks.
