Plot summary
Crown Prince Karl Heinrich is first in line to the throne of Karlsburg, and his uncle, King Karl VII, has raised him apart from other children. His tutor, Dr. Jüttner, is his closest friend. Once the prince passes his examinations, the king sends him to Heidelberg to study, and Jüttner goes along as his chaperon. Rooms are arranged for them at a modest inn, and although the quarters fall short of royal standards, Karl chooses to stay, taken with Kathi, the innkeeper's niece. He is welcomed into Corps Saxonia and gets his first taste of the collegial life of a university. Kathi is engaged to another man, a match her family favors, though she is unsure of it.

- Lubitsch's multiple takes and minimal rehearsal time were hard on Ramon Novarro and Norma Shearer; Shearer complained to her fiance, Irving Thalberg, about the director acting scenes out for the actors, and he told her everyone had a lot to learn from Lubitsch.
- The beer garden love scene, now acclaimed by critics as one of the film's best, was a headache for Ernst Lubitsch, who reshot it entirely and was still unhappy with it; a rumor that John M. Stahl reshot it was denied by Lubitsch's assistant Andrew Marton.
- Director King Vidor said Ernst Lubitsch made Ramon Novarro film a "buddy scene with an effeminate extra" to play up the charge between them; Novarro was uncomfortable and resentful, and was guarded about his homosexuality his whole life.
- The film ran more than 108 days in production and cost $1,205,000; Lubitsch's drive for authenticity infuriated the studio, as when costume designer Ali Hubert brought thirty-two trunks of wardrobe and props over from Europe.
- Ramon Novarro won the lead after John Gilbert was considered; Ernst Lubitsch felt that both Novarro and Norma Shearer were miscast, but he was unable to override the studio's casting decisions.
- After principal photography, Ernst Lubitsch traveled to Germany to film establishing shots, none of which appeared in the finished movie; the film's limited location work was shot in Laurel Canyon instead.
