Plot summary
A mockumentary tells the story of the Rutles through skits and gags that follow the Beatles' chronology. Dirk McQuickly, Ron Nasty, Stig O'Hara and Barry Wom are four mop-topped musicians from Liverpool who build a following in Hamburg's Rat-Keller. A lifetime recording contract follows, and the band's albums include Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band, with songs such as Ouch! and Cheese and Onions. A concert at Ché Stadium and a slot on the Ed Sullivan Show bring the group worldwide fame. Around them stand Eric Manchester, the band's press agent and lawyer, and Ron Decline, called the world's most feared promoter. Brian Thigh, a former record producer, once turned the group down. Artistic differences and other problems put Rutlemania at risk.

- George Harrison himself turns up as a television reporter outside Rutle Corps while staff carry stolen office property past him, a nod to the looting of the Beatles' own Apple Boutique and headquarters, where even the ceiling lining went. His microphone is then snatched out of his hand.
- Eric Idle mimed his Rutle singing: the vocals for Dirk McQuickly were recorded slightly sped up by Ollie Halsall, who also played the lead guitar parts, while John Halsey, Ricky Fataar and Neil Innes sang and played their own.
- Neil Innes, who wrote the Rutles songs, knew the Beatles at first hand: his Bonzo Dog Band appeared in Magical Mystery Tour performing "Death Cab for Cutie", and Paul McCartney produced the group's 1968 hit I'm the Urban Spaceman, which Innes wrote and sang.
