Geoffrey Palmer
Biography
Geoffrey Palmer was an English actor who became best known for a run of British television sitcoms, among them The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976 to 1979), Butterflies (1978 to 1983) and As Time Goes By (1992 to 2005), in which he played Lionel Hardcastle opposite Judi Dench. Born in North Finchley in 1927, he served in the Royal Marines and then worked briefly as an unpaid trainee assistant stage manager before early television parts in The Army Game, The Baron and Cathy Come Home. A major break came with John Osborne's West of Suez at the Royal Court, and he went on to work with the National Theatre Company. His films included A Fish Called Wanda (1988), The Madness of King George (1994), Mrs Brown (1997), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Paddington (2014). He also did voice-over and narration work, and was appointed an OBE in 2004. He died in 2020.
