Plot summary
A starship from the planet Sto, built as a replica of the Earth ocean liner Titanic, orbits present-day Earth so its passengers can watch Christmas, which they consider a custom of a primitive culture. The TARDIS strikes the vessel, and the Doctor runs the TARDIS's self-repair program before going aboard and stowing away. He joins a party of aliens that includes Astrid Peth, a waitress, on a brief excursion to London, where the streets are empty because residents fled after extraterrestrial attacks over the two previous Christmases. Astrid, a dreamer, sees in the Doctor a chance to explore beyond the ship.

- Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the Titanic sinking, said the episode was disrespectful because her father lies on the wreck, calling the Titanic a tragedy that tore families apart. A spokeswoman replied that no offense was intended and that the ship in the story is a spaceship called Titanic, not a boat.
- Russell T Davies wrote the part of Astrid Peth specifically for Kylie Minogue, calling her casting a "very exceptional case", and said writing a role for one actor was "dangerous territory" because the wanted actor might be unavailable or turn it down.
- Filming was rescheduled so David Tennant could be present when his mother died and was buried in July 2007; while he was away, scenes in the Titanic's reception area were shot at the Exchange in Swansea and the Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay.
- Five costumes were made for Kylie Minogue's scenes and her stunt doubles, each part of each costume made separately to keep her role secret. Designer Louise Page rejected a long dress as atypical of Minogue and chose a 1950s cinema usherette look instead.
- "Voyage of the Damned" was watched by 13.31 million viewers on Christmas Day 2007, the highest figure for Doctor Who since the 1979 serial City of Death and still the highest of any episode since the show was revived in 2005.

In early drafts Astrid Peth did not die; Russell T Davies killed her so Kylie Minogue could focus on her music, and changed her death from falling during a fight with Max Capricorn into an attack with a fork-lift truck to make the scene less fleeting.SPOILER
