Plot summary
Wally Winthrop lives in New York, where her husband William, a workaholic psychiatrist, neglects her. She follows the story of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson and goes to the Sotheby's auction of the Windsor estate, where objects from their life together are sold. A guard there, Evgeni, takes an interest in her. In 1930, Edward holds a party at Fort Belvedere and meets Wallis, the wife of Ernest Simpson; the two are drawn to each other.

- "Masterpiece" was shortlisted for Best Original Song at the 84th Academy Awards but was ultimately ineligible, because Academy rules bar a song that appears after the film's closing credits have begun and it does not begin playing until more than one minute into the credits.
- Margo Stilley was signed to play Lady Thelma Furness but left the project citing artistic differences with Madonna, saying she wished the cast luck because they were all really talented.
- When Madonna asked for a Michael O'Connor wedding dress on display at the National Museum of Costume in Scotland for a scene with Riseborough, museum general manager Margaret Roberts said they were only too happy to oblige the request from the production company.
- A bracelet slipped off Riseborough's wrist and was lost in the Mediterranean Sea during filming, and Madonna ordered an immediate replacement.
- Vera Farmiga was initially signed for the role of Wallis Simpson in W.E., but withdrew from the project when she became pregnant.
- Ewan McGregor was offered the role of King Edward VIII in W.E., but he was replaced in the part by James D'Arcy.
