Plot summary
Oswald and Oliver Deuce are identical twin zoologists who study animal behavior at a zoo. Both of their wives are killed when a large swan crashes through the windshield of a car. The woman driving it, Alba Bewick, survives the crash but loses a leg. Venus de Milo, a prostitute and storyteller who works at the zoo, tries to build a relationship with the brothers, hoping to help them recover. The twins become absorbed in decay: they watch films about the origins of life and set a camera on a bitten green apple to record it rotting. Their attention moves from fruit and shrimp to larger creatures, and they grow close to Alba, the woman at the wheel.

- The making of A Zed & Two Noughts was itself turned into a film: Philip Hoffman's 1986 documentary O, Zoo!: The Making of a Fiction Film was based in part around the making of the picture.
- Elements of Michael Nyman's score invoke the "Dies Irae" section from Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's Requiem, and the "Angelfish Decay"/"Swan Rot"/"L'Escargot" theme was originally written for Childs Play, a dance work commissioned by Lucinda Childs.
