Ken Campbell
Biography
Ken Campbell was an English actor, director and writer known for experimental theater. Born in Ilford, Essex, he studied at RADA and joined Colchester Repertory before becoming resident dramatist at Stoke-on-Trent's Victoria Theatre in 1967. He founded The Ken Campbell Roadshow, which performed in unconventional places such as pubs, and later staged ambitious productions. With Chris Langham he formed the Science Fiction Theatre of Liverpool to mount Illuminatus, a nine-hour cycle that moved to the National Theatre. He also directed Neil Oram's The Warp, a 22-hour play cycle that the Guinness Book of Records called the longest play in the world. He appeared in Peter Greenaway's A Zed and Two Noughts (1985). He acted in Charles Crichton's A Fish Called Wanda (1988). For television he portrayed the corrupt lawyer Alex Gladwell in Law & Order. Beginning in the late 1980s, his career included writing and performing solo shows, and in 2008 Staffordshire University awarded him an honorary doctorate.

A first
In the 1970s, Ken Campbell became notorious for staging Neil Oram's play cycle The Warp, which ran 22 hours and was named by the Guinness Book of Records as the longest play in the world.
A role that slipped away
In 1987 Campbell auditioned for the Seventh Doctor in Doctor Who but lost the part to his old protégé Sylvester McCoy; the script editor later said Campbell's interpretation was considered too dark for television.
A change of course
In 1969, after seeing the American Living Theatre at The Roundhouse, Campbell started The Ken Campbell Roadshow. This small theater group put on shows in unusual places like pubs, and its members included Bob Hoskins and Sylvester McCoy.
Beyond film
In 2001 Campbell staged a pidgin English version of Macbeth called Makbed, part of his campaign to have Bislama adopted as a world language.
