Plot summary
In Edwardian London, Wendy Darling spins bedtime stories for her younger brothers, John and Michael, about Captain Hook and his pirates, while Peter Pan listens outside their nursery window. Aunt Millicent, unimpressed, urges the family to consider Wendy's future. One night Peter returns and watches her sleep, and Nana, the family's nurse dog, bites off his shadow. Her schoolteacher finds a drawing of Peter, and Wendy tries to intercept the disciplinary letter meant for her father, and Nana's pursuit causes an accident at the bank that embarrasses him. Peter comes back for his shadow, and Wendy sews it back on. He invites her and her brothers to Neverland, where she can tell stories to the Lost Boys, and Tinker Bell's fairy dust carries the four of them away.

- The film is dedicated to Dodi Al-Fayed, executive producer of the 1991 film Hook, who planned a live-action Peter Pan and shared the idea with Diana, Princess of Wales. After his son died in the car crash that also killed Diana, Mohammed Al-Fayed co-produced this 2003 adaptation.
- Jeremy Sumpter was 13 when cast as Peter Pan, a role traditionally played by a woman on stage and in earlier film versions. This was the first live-action theatrical release with a boy in the part.
- Finding Neverland, a film about J. M. Barrie and the creation of Peter Pan, was set for 2003 release, but the producers of this film, who held the screen rights, refused permission for it to use scenes from the play unless it was delayed until the following year.
- Tinker Bell was to be entirely computer-animated, but according to Jason Isaacs the filmmakers were so impressed by Ludivine Sagnier's performance that they composited her live action into the film with digital enhancements instead.
- Jason Isaacs, who is right-handed, learned to sword fight left-handed because Barrie's original story has the hook replace the pirate's right hand; the filmmakers kept the detail instead of switching hands as other adaptations had done.
- Jeremy Sumpter grew several inches during production, so staging tricks were used to keep Hook's height advantage in their face-to-face scenes, and producer Lucy Fisher said the window Peter flies out of had to be enlarged twice.
- Jeremy Sumpter trained for five months before shooting, learning harness flying and sword fighting, and said he got stabbed a couple of times with a sword during the film.
