Plot summary
Aboard a flight from Rome to New York, the concert pianist Manina Stuart meets David Lawrence, a businessman who is unhappily married and has a son in his late teens. Engine repairs force the plane down in Naples, and the two pass the day sightseeing. A recording of "September Song" plays at lunch, and they talk until their departure time has passed. Manina is unmarried; David is not. They stay on in Naples for a few days and fall in love, then learn that the aircraft they had intended to board went into the sea. A clerical error placed both their names among the passengers presumed dead. Deciding that their absence will not matter to the world, they resolve to let the error stand and make a new home in Florence, cutting themselves off from everyone they knew.
