Ferdy Mayne

Biography

Ferdy Mayne was a German-British actor who worked almost continuously for some 60 years, much of it in Britain, and became known as a character player in suave villain and aristocratic eccentric roles. Born in Mainz, he left Germany for the UK in the early 1930s and studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, later appearing in many West End plays. He gained international recognition for playing the vampire Count von Krolock in Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967), and he also appeared in Where Eagles Dare (1968), Barry Lyndon and Benefit of the Doubt (1993). Among his 230 film and television parts were the semi-regular Albert Grand in Cagney and Lacey and Ludwig Rosenthal in the 1983 miniseries Winds of War, after he moved to the United States. He died in 1998.
