Peter Sanderson is among the youngest and most successful chess grandmasters in history, a widower with a daughter, Erica, and a tournament under way. As more homicides occur, newly appointed Captain Frank Sedman and Detective Andy Wagner conclude that a serial killer is responsible. The killer telephones Peter and urges him to work out the game behind the deaths. Peter cooperates with the police, and because his link to the killings keeps growing, they bring in the psychologist Kathy Sheppard to judge whether he is as innocent as he says.
