Plot summary
Kees Popinga has spent eighteen years as bookkeeper for a Dutch firm run by Julius de Koster Jr. His life is comfortable but narrow, and though he loves trains he has never traveled farther than Amsterdam. French inspector Lucas arrives to question the firm about Dutch money turning up illegally in Paris, and de Koster has Kees show him that the books are sound. Kees later sees de Koster kissing a woman at a station, and when Lucas questions both men about her, de Koster lies and Kees supports him. That night Kees finds de Koster burning ledgers and hears that the firm will be bankrupt by morning. At a canal, de Koster's briefcase opens to reveal cash and a Paris train ticket. Kees takes the briefcase and climbs aboard the Paris train, leaving his family behind.
