Plot summary
Philippe Douvier runs a French criminal organization, and his New York associates doubt his leadership. His aide, Guy Algo, proposes proving the organization's strength by killing Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau. A bomb fails, and a martial artist named Mr. Chong is fought off. Douvier telephones Clouseau to lure him into an ambush, but the thief Claude Russo has taken the inspector's car and clothes and is shot instead, so the newspapers report Clouseau dead. Clouseau's former superior, Charles Dreyfus, regains his sanity and leaves the psychiatric hospital. Still alive and wearing Russo's clothing, Clouseau is brought to that same hospital, walks out dressed as Dreyfus, and comes home to find his manservant Cato has turned the apartment into a Chinese-themed brothel. The two plan to find whoever paid for the killing.

- Blake Edwards wanted Revenge of the Pink Panther to be built largely from leftover humorous footage from The Pink Panther Strikes Again, with new material written and shot around it, but Peter Sellers balked and insisted the film use all-new footage.
- Peter Sellers wrote his own Pink Panther film, Romance of the Pink Panther, and was willing to make it without Blake Edwards before his death in July 1980; United Artists considered recasting Clouseau before Edwards returned and replaced the character instead.
- DePatie-Freleng Enterprises designed the opening animated titles, the first time since Inspector Clouseau in 1968 that the company had animated the titles of a Pink Panther film; the two films in between were done by Richard Williams' Studio.
