Michael Balfour
Biography
Michael Balfour was an English actor who worked mainly in British films and television from the 1940s to the 1990s. Born in Kent, he made his television debut in a 1938 BBC production of The Marvellous History of St Bernard. He became a familiar face in nearly two hundred screen and television appearances, often in small character and supporting roles. He was frequently cast as comical heavies or shady figures whose loud clothes were a trademark, and he sometimes played American roles convincingly. His films brought him under the direction of Billy Wilder, Roman Polanski, Tim Burton, François Truffaut, and many others. On television he appeared in shows such as Danger Man, The Avengers, and Z-Cars. When screen work slowed in the late 1970s, he toured with European circuses as a clown, founded Circus Hazzard, and invented a personal clown character. He later devoted more time to painting and sculpture, even running his own gallery.
