Biography

Patrick Barr was an English actor whose career lasted more than fifty years and included 144 film and television appearances. Born in Akola, British India, in 1908, he attended Radley College and then Trinity College, Oxford, before moving from the stage to the screen with The Merry Men of Sherwood in 1932. In the 1930s he was often cast as benevolent authority figures and dependable friends. He began working in British television in the early 1950s, and his film roles from that period and later included The Dam Busters (1955), Saint Joan (1957), Billy Liar (1963), and Octopussy (1983), along with The First Great Train Robbery (1979). On television he played Richard the Lionheart in Robin Hood, Hobson in the 1967 Doctor Who serial The Moonbase, and parts in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and The Avengers. In 1981 he voiced Gamling in a radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings broadcast by BBC Radio 4. He died in 1985.
