Plot summary
Norman Pitkin works as an apprentice to Mr Grimsdale, a butcher. When a young thug raids the shop, Mr Grimsdale follows Norman's suggestion and holds his gold watch in his mouth for safety. He swallows it, and the accident puts him in the hospital. Norman visits and causes disorder throughout the wards. There he meets Lindy, a girl who has not spoken or smiled since her parents died in an airplane accident. Norman decides to help her. The hospital staff ban him from returning so Norman and Mr Grimsdale enlist in the St John Ambulance Brigade to see Lindy again.
