Plot summary
Arthur Pimm assists at a London museum whose warehouse has burned, and everything inside is destroyed except one statue, which the curator, Harold Grove, calls a Mid-European primitive. Grove sends Pimm for a flashlight while he examines the figure, and is afterwards found dead on the ground. The statue is identified as the Golem of Judah Loew, made in the 16th century, and Pimm discovers a compartment in its right foot holding a scroll inscribed with the Hebrew word emeth. Pimm lives with his mother's preserved body in his apartment, dressing it in jewelry taken from the museum's exhibits. He is in love with Ellen Grove, the dead curator's daughter, while Jim Perkins, from the New York Museum, wants the statue for his own institution.
