Ronald Adam

Biography

Ronald Adam was a British actor and theater manager who trained as a chartered accountant before turning to the stage and shortening his surname for it. Born in Bromyard, Herefordshire, into a family of stage performers, he ran the Embassy theater from 1932 to 1939, staging more than 150 productions, 30 of which transferred to the West End. He made his film debut in 1938 and later appeared in The Lion Has Wings (1939), The Foreman Went to France (1942) and Angels One Five (1952), playing a group controller in the last. Appointed an OBE in 1946, he went on to appear in more than 140 film and television productions between 1946 and 1978, and wrote plays including An English Summer and A Wind on the Heath. He died in 1979.

A change of course
In the summer of 1940, during the Battle of Britain, Adam served as a Fighter Controller for the Hornchurch sector. He coordinated fighter command interceptions using radar and ground observers, then sent fighters to intercept.
Behind the camera
Adam took over management of the Embassy Theatre in April 1932, starting with Madame Pepita. From 1932 to 1939 he staged more than 150 new productions and revivals, and thirty of his productions moved to various West End theaters.
