His father, David Graham, flies in from Canada, where he has been treated for alcoholism, and has one day to act. Alec has given up hope and wants nothing to do with him. David is certain his son could never have killed anyone, and with the help of Alec's solicitor Jeremy Clayton he tries to assemble evidence in time. His search takes him to Jennie's sister Agnes Cole and then to the household of car manufacturer Robert Stanford, whose family gave Alec the only support he ever had.
