Biography

Bonar Colleano was an American actor who spent most of his working life in Britain. Born in New York City into an Australian circus family, he moved to Britain at twelve and performed in music halls before entertaining troops after 1939. His first major film role came in the wartime drama The Way to the Stars (1945), as an American airman, and he played similar servicemen in Wanted for Murder (1946) and A Matter of Life and Death (1946). A stage turn as Stanley Kowalski in the first English production of A Streetcar Named Desire (1949), directed by Laurence Olivier and with Vivien Leigh, raised his profile. Leading film roles followed in Pool of London (1951) and A Tale of Five Cities (1951), and he starred in Stanley Kramer's Eight Iron Men (1952). Later credits included Interpol (1957) and Fire Down Below (1957). He died in 1958.
