Biography

Debicki was born in Paris to a Polish father and an Australian mother of Irish descent, who were both dancers. When she was five, the family moved to Melbourne where she grew up with two younger siblings. She became interested in ballet at an early age and trained as a dancer until deciding to switch to theatre. A student at Huntingtower School in Melbourne's east, Debicki achieved two perfect study scores in Drama and English and was the school's dux when she graduated in 2007. In 2010, she completed a degree in drama at the University of Melbourne's Victorian College of the Arts. In August 2009, she was the recipient of a Richard Pratt Bursary for outstanding acting students in their second year of training.

  1. Behind the award

Debicki's work on the sixth and final season earned her a Golden Globe, a Critics' Choice Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Primetime Emmy. That Emmy made her the first Australian actress to take Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

  2. First role

In the 2011 comedy film A Few Best Men, Debicki played a secretary, which was her first professional screen role. Director Baz Luhrmann then cast her as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, her first major screen role.

  3. Early training

Debicki trained as a dancer before turning to theater, and after growing taller than her teachers by age twelve she decided ballet was unlikely to be a professional career.

  4. Getting ready for a role

While preparing for The Crown, Debicki watched footage of Diana, Princess of Wales and trained with a movement coach. Her aim was to uncover the "emotional logic" behind Diana's posture, gaze and gestures, not merely to copy how she moved.

  5. Beyond film

Debicki won best newcomer at the Sydney Theatre Awards after playing Madame in the Sydney Theatre Company's 2013 staging of Jean Genet's The Maids, sharing the stage with Cate Blanchett as Claire and Isabelle Huppert as Solange.
