Plot summary
Jennifer Fox is a documentary filmmaker and a professor in her 40s. Her mother Nettie phones, alarmed, having found an essay Jennifer wrote at 13 about a relationship that summer with an older boyfriend, which she had never mentioned to her mother as a girl. Reading it again, Jennifer looks into that period of her life. In her memory she was older and sophisticated, and she is surprised by how small and childlike she looks in photographs from that time. It started one summer at a horse training camp she attended with three other girls. Jenny stayed with Mrs. G, and she and the other girls ran with Bill Allens, a professional coach in his 40s.

Jennifer Fox made The Tale in 2018 but waited five years, until a 2023 interview two years after her abuser's death, to name him: Ted Nash, a two-time Olympic rowing medalist and nine-time Olympic coach. She also identified a former riding instructor as an accomplice.
