Plot summary
Macbeth leads King Duncan's troops in a civil war and returns victorious, though the fighting costs lives, among them boy soldiers. Three women come to him and Banquo and address Macbeth as the Thane of Cawdor and as Scotland's future king, then disappear. Duncan learns of the victory, has the current Thane of Cawdor executed for siding with Norse invaders, and hands the title to Macbeth. Macbeth tells his wife what the women promised. She asks dark spirits for guidance, and when she hears that Duncan will spend the night, she pushes her husband toward killing the King. At the evening's feast, Duncan names Malcolm his heir.
