Plot summary
Nick Carraway, who once wanted to be a writer, moves from the Midwest to New York in the summer of 1922 and takes a small cottage in West Egg, beside the mansion of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who hosts enormous parties. Across the bay, Nick visits Daisy, his cousin, and her husband Tom, and the golfer Jordan Baker lets him know that Tom keeps a mistress. At one of Gatsby's parties, where the other guests have not seen the host, Nick meets his neighbor face to face. Gatsby takes him into the city for lunch, where he tells of an Oxford education, a war record and a family now dead, then introduces him to his business partner Meyer Wolfshiem.

- Carey Mulligan burst into tears after learning she had won the role of Daisy: Baz Luhrmann telephoned her with his decision while she was standing on the red carpet at an event in New York.
- Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan took his first Hollywood role in the film, playing Meyer Wolfshiem, and he worked for free as a favour to director Baz Luhrmann.
- Luhrmann auditioned a long list of actresses for Daisy, among them Keira Knightley, Jessica Alba, Rebecca Hall and Blake Lively; Scarlett Johansson was also in contention but pulled out over her commitment to Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo.
- Ben Affleck was in talks to play Tom Buchanan in April 2011 but had to pass because of a scheduling conflict with Argo; Bradley Cooper had previously lobbied for the part and Luke Evans was a major contender.

The screenplay by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce made five notable changes to the novel's plot, among them having Nick Carraway write from a sanitarium and, at the end, having Gatsby die thinking his pursuit of Daisy was successful.- The costumes broke with period accuracy: the women were clothed to emphasize their breasts, most prominently Daisy's push-up bra, in contrast to the flat-chested fashions of the era.
