Plot summary
On Earth in 1980, Meredith Quill meets a man she calls her spaceman, who shows her a small alien seedling. Decades later, her son Peter Quill leads the Guardians of the Galaxy, who fight an interdimensional beast for the Sovereigns in exchange for a prisoner, Gamora's sister Nebula. Rocket takes some of the Sovereigns' Anulax batteries for himself, and a fleet of drones chases the crew down. A passing ship destroys the drones, and out steps Ego, who says he is Peter's father, with his empathic assistant Mantis. Ego invites Peter, Gamora and Drax to his planet. Elsewhere, Yondu Udonta, cut off from the greater Ravager community, is approached by the Sovereigns' High Priestess with a proposition.

- Gunn wanted to use the Sneepers, an alien race that first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1964, as background characters, but Marvel's legal department advised against it because the name was too close to an Icelandic word. Legal later cleared it, partly because of the media coverage his Facebook post drew.
- Pratt suggested Kurt Russell for the part of Ego, who replaces Quill's original comic book father J'son. Ego could only be used after 20th Century Fox agreed to hand his film rights back to Marvel in exchange for changing the power set of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, whom Fox wanted for Deadpool.
- Prop master Russell Bobbitt could not find the cassette decks used in the first film, and every Sony Walkman headset sourced for the sequel was broken. Sony had none available and three pairs on eBay cost around $1,800 without being the right model, so he built six from scratch.
- Matthew McConaughey turned down the role of the villain in favour of The Dark Tower, feeling he would have been "an amendment" in a colorful part made for another big-name actor.
- The prop department made props that could be eaten on camera: a stinkbug-inspired insect of chocolate injected with black honey, so it poured out of the actor's mouth when he bit down, and a "yarrow root" of non-dairy white chocolate designed from enlarged images of pollen.
- Vol. 2 was the first film shot with an 8K camera, the Red Weapon 8K. When Braham, Gunn and Marvel settled on it in September 2015 only a single early prototype existed, and they spent three months working with Red to get it ready for filming.

Gunn considered having Gamora sacrifice herself to save Peter, since Saldaña had expected to play the role only once, but Feige and Louis D'Esposito talked him out of it, partly because Marvel planned her death for Infinity War. Yondu Udonta died instead, though Gunn was reluctant to kill off his friend Michael Rooker's character.
