Plot summary
The Fisherwoman lives by herself in a hut at the edge of a village, where the other residents mock her for being unmarried and for the smell of the fish she sells. When the Tailor's Wife's Sister marries, the unmarried women shake little baskets holding eggs, and the ritual ends with her named as the next to marry, which the village women read as an ill omen. She asks the Basket Weaver to build her a husband. He takes the job and tells her to come to the chapel in a month. On the night before the ceremony the Wicker Husband reaches the village, seeking clothes, shoes and somewhere to sleep before the wedding day. The Fisherwoman and the Wicker Husband marry.
