Plot summary

The de Berghmann family carries an old prophecy about its castle: if twin boys are born, the younger will kill the elder inside the Black Room. Twins come, and the baron has that chamber sealed before he dies. Two decades later Gregor holds the title and rules so harshly that his subjects resent him. Anton, his twin, has traveled widely in Europe and returns to the castle for a visit; his right arm is useless. He will not credit the rumors he hears about his brother, while the villagers and the staff of the castle welcome him. Thea, daughter of the family's advisor Colonel Hassell, admires Anton, though she loves Lieutenant Albert Lussan, and Gregor's efforts to court her get him nowhere.
