Plot summary
For 26 years Louis Menkins has lived inside a maximum-security prison, convicted of a violent crime he committed as a young man. He is five weeks from release, with an uncertain future waiting on the outside. Then Beecher arrives, a young man beginning his own sentence, and Louis sees a younger version of himself. A friendship forms between the two, and it comes with complications. Gang conflicts at the prison grow, and Beecher is caught in the middle of them, which leaves Louis weighing a choice: protect the young man and risk the release he has waited decades for, or keep his head down and walk out.
