Plot summary
Cyrus leads the Gramercy Riffs, the strongest gang in New York City. He asks a hundred gangs to send nine unarmed members each to a midnight meeting at Van Cortlandt Park, where he proposes that they join together in a truce. The Warriors, a Coney Island gang, send Cleon, Swan, Ajax, Fox, Rembrandt, Snow, Vermin, Cowboy and Cochise. Cyrus is shot and the Warriors are blamed, so the police and rival gangs hunt them as they try to get back to Coney Island.

- Actor David Patrick Kelly improvised the film's now-iconic taunt, 'Warriors, come out to play,' clinking together discarded beer bottles he found under the boardwalk after director Walter Hill rejected his first idea of using dead pigeons.
- President Ronald Reagan was such a fan of the film that he called lead actor Michael Beck personally to say he had screened it at Camp David and enjoyed it.
- The film's release was followed by real violence: it was linked to sporadic outbreaks of vandalism and three killings, two in Southern California and one in Boston, involving moviegoers on their way to or from showings.
- In France the film was rated X for incitement to violence on 25 June 1979 by the Movies Control Board, which deemed that it gave a very realistic vision of urban guerrilla warfare. Ten minutes were cut, including Cleon's speech, so it could play in normal theaters.
- Actor Roger Hill, who played gang leader Cyrus, sued Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive in 2005 over the use of his voice and likeness in a Warriors video game without royalties; he died in 2014 with the case still unresolved.

Director Walter Hill insisted that Thomas G. Waites' character be killed off, telling Craig Baxley to kill him. Baxley found a crew member who resembled Waites and staged a scene in which the character is thrown off a subway platform in front of an approaching train.
