Plot summary
The Tempio brothers are violent criminals in New York City during the 1930s. One of the three, Johnny, is buried, and his brothers Ray and Chez are in mourning. Ray is the cold and calculating one; Chez is hot tempered. Flashbacks reveal the brothers' past and their families, and show Johnny as the most sensitive of the three, a man whose opinions shift after he attends communist meetings as a spy. A rival gangster, Gaspare Spoglia, is the chief suspect in the murder, and Ray and Chez want revenge for their brother. Ray's wife speaks against the reprisals and the violence they would cause, while Clara, Chez's wife, struggles with her husband's obsessive nature.
