Plot summary
Prohibition has left Jericho, Texas, split between two bootlegging outfits, Doyle's Irish crew and Fredo Strozzi's Italians, and the fighting has driven the rest of the town out. A drifter who introduces himself as John Smith arrives and lets a woman called Felina cross the road, which brings Doyle's men down on his car and a warning from their leader, Finn. With no money for repairs, Smith gets nothing from Sheriff Ed Galt and learns how things stand from hotel keeper Joe Monday. He walks into Doyle's club, challenges Finn and shoots him, then offers his gun to Strozzi. Carmonte, Strozzi's cousin, does not trust him, and Smith pays Strozzi's mistress Lucy for information.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Last Man Standing (1996)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Walter Hill said it took him a long time to agree to remake Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, fearing the idea was "insanity" given he would be working in the shadow of a filmmaker he called "probably our most revered."
- Once Hill learned Kurosawa supported an American remake, he agreed to write and direct only on condition it not be set as a Western, since an earlier unauthorized European remake, the Spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars, had already been dragged through litigation over Yojimbo.
SPOILER
Hill's original cut ran over two hours, and the leftover alternate footage used to cut the trailers included an extra gang shootout and a more drawn-out, brutal alternate death for the character Hickey, some of which survives only in promotional stills.
