Cyril Delevanti
Biography
Cyril Delevanti was an English character actor whose long career in American films spanned the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born in London, he acted on the English stage before emigrating to the United States in 1921, and he spent the 1920s performing on the American stage and coaching actors such as Douglas Fairbanks and James Craig. In the 1930s he served as artistic director of a little theater in Houston, Texas. His first screen appearance came in Devotion (1931), and from the 1940s he took many small, often uncredited parts, among them Deception (1946) and Les Girls (1957). He appeared in roughly 170 productions, and earned a Golden Globe nomination as Best Supporting Actor for The Night of the Iguana (1964). Later roles included The Killing of Sister George (1968) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). He also worked extensively in television, including a regular role in the western series Jefferson Drum. He died in 1975.
