Plot summary
In the war's last year, American units in the foothills of the Alps work to push German soldiers out of a village supply post. First Lieutenant Sam Loggins leads an artillery observation unit whose radioman is missing. Replacements arrive by truck, and Corporal Britt Harris, who says he has radio training, is given the post. Harris pursues girlfriends and luxuries, and he is the son of a New Jersey textile mill owner. The Colonel gives the unit leave in Nice, where Loggins meets Monique Blair on a quay and they have dinner.
