Plot summary
Martin Arrowsmith introduces himself to the bacteriologist Max Gottlieb, who tells the young medical student to complete the regular course of study first. After graduating, Arrowsmith turns down Gottlieb's offer of a research post because the salary cannot support the nurse he loves, Leora, and the couple settles in her rural South Dakota town. Unhappy in practice there, he carries out research in his kitchen and develops a successful serum. He abandons the practice and joins Gottlieb at the McGurk Institute in New York City. Leora, who has miscarried and cannot have more children, devotes herself to his career. The institute sends him to the West Indies, where bubonic plague has broken out, to test a serum of his that kills one type of germ.
