Plot summary

Robert Kraft has just been appointed chairman of the committee that runs a large cemetery. The caretaker's map in the office marks each gravesite on the grounds: black pins for graves already occupied, white pins for plots that have been sold but remain empty. Unfamiliar with the work, Kraft sets two black pins in the wrong places. The couple who had bought those plots are killed in an automobile accident soon after, and Kraft suspects that he is somehow responsible. Hoping to settle his nerves, he swaps a white pin for a black one, and when that person dies within the week he becomes more convinced that the map, or he himself, holds a dark power. Friends and co-workers who doubt him urge him to try again.
