Plot summary
Summer has come, and Sean Roberts, eighteen and newly out of high school, spends much of it with Diane Marshall, who teaches him and is twenty-eight, and whose husband is away racing motorcycles more often than he stays home. Ralph Gordon watches Diane as well, and he is angry at Sean. Lou, Ralph's younger brother, dies in a fall while Sean is with him, and Ralph blames Sean for it. Ralph warns Sean to keep quiet, threatening his tongue, and Sean, seeing Ralph eyeing him, lies to Sheriff Murphy. Diane tells Sean she knows Ralph has been following her, and she invites him in for tea and then a drink.
