Plot summary
Ben Mockridge owns a handgun he paid four dollars for and is set on becoming a cowboy. He asks Frank Culpepper, a former gunslinger, for a place on the drive Culpepper is making to Fort Lewis, Colorado. Culpepper agrees without enthusiasm and sends him to the cook as his helper. Ben bids his mother farewell, and she tells him to behave. On the trail he finds the adults have little interest in a young hand, and the tasks Culpepper gives him are ones he handles poorly, causing serious trouble. Rustlers stampede the herd, and Culpepper and his hands ride out after them.
