Plot summary
Kelly McIntyre is a disco dancer who collapses on the dance floor, and strychnine is found in her system. The collapse is read as a suicide attempt, though she has taken nothing on purpose, and her boyfriend and her doctor have her committed to Cedar Springs Hospital, to a psychiatric ward on the fifth floor, where the patients around her are plainly disturbed. Kelly herself is sane. She has no help on the floor, and her boyfriend will not take her out of the hospital. An orderly named Carl, unbalanced, takes a predatory interest in her.
