Plot summary
The Poseidon, a luxury liner, is crossing the Atlantic to New York. Robert Ramsey, a former mayor of New York City and a firefighter, sails with Jennifer, his daughter, and Christian, her boyfriend. Dylan Johns, once a submariner, now works as a professional gambler. Richard Nelson, an architect, is also on board. On New Year's Eve, while passengers celebrate in the ballroom, a rogue wave rolls the ship upside down. Captain Bradford, badly hurt, says beacons have been launched and asks everyone to stay where they are.

- For the capsizing ship, two sets were built for each main room on the Warner Bros. soundstage in Burbank, one right-side-up and one upside down, with the inverted ballroom built on top of a large water tank so it could be flooded and drained in a matter of hours.
- To get development of the film started, Fleiss had to promise the family of the original producer, Irwin Allen, that he would not direct it; they had expressed reservations because Fleiss had directed Drunken Jackasses: The Quest.
- The film's opening shot, a two-and-a-half-minute tour of the ship's exterior, featured one of the most complex digital models ILM had ever created, and its water was made with proprietary software called PhysBAM, created in collaboration with Stanford University.
- Poseidon grossed $181 million worldwide on a budget of $160 million, but after the costs of promotion and distribution Warner Bros. lost $70-80 million on the film, making it a box-office bomb.
