Plot summary
Jim Bennett teaches literature in Los Angeles and gambles as a way of destroying himself. He owes $260,000 to Lee, who runs a private gambling den, and $50,000 to Neville Baraka, a loan shark, and Lee gives him seven days to settle the debt. In class he talks about literary excellence, holds up Shakespeare as an example, names exemplary athletes such as Dexter, a tennis star, and says that only Amy Phillips can make a career in literature. He also confronts Lamar Allen, a basketball player who ignores class and plans to play in the NBA. Amy also waits tables in secret at the gambling house, and the two take an interest in each other. His mother Roberta refuses to give him any more money. Frank, another loan shark, sets a condition that Jim refuses.
