Trailer

Plot summary

A thunderstorm knocks a tree through David Drayton's lakeside house in Bridgton, Maine. The next morning a thick mist moves across the lake, and David drives into town with his son Billy and their neighbor Brent Norton for supplies. Military convoys pass them on the road. Inside the supermarket, a local named Dan Miller bursts in and warns of something hiding in the mist. As a siren sounds, Ollie Weeks and Bud Brown shut the doors and the mist swallows the building. Bagger Norm goes out to restart the emergency generator and a tentacled creature seizes him. The shoppers barricade themselves in, while Mrs. Carmody tells them the mist is divine punishment.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Mist (2007)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Frank Darabont altered the ending of Stephen King's novella for the film, a change King praised so warmly that he said people who spoil the film's ending should be “hung by the neck until dead”.
  • Darabont based the film's protagonist, artist David Drayton, on real poster designer Drew Struzan, whose own artwork appears on-screen as Drayton's Dark Tower-inspired painting; Struzan even made a poster for The Mist itself that was never used in its marketing.
  • A fan of Dead Can Dance, Darabont overlaid the band's song “Host of Seraphim”, a spiritual piece characterised by wailing and chanting, on the film; he thought it played “as a requiem mass for the human race”.
  • To prepare the cast for the mist's monsters, creature designers Greg Nicotero and Everett Burrell showed the actors physical puppets demonstrating how the creatures' eyes and mouths worked, giving them a reference for reacting to motion-capture dots during actual filming.
  • Although Darabont considered shooting The Mist digitally, he chose 400 ASA Fujifilm instead, wanting a grainy texture rather than a picture that looked “too beautiful”.
  • Darabont offered Stephen King a supporting role in the film, but King turned it down because he did not want to travel to the shoot, and the part went to actor Brian Libby instead.
