Plot summary
Fortuna "Lucky" Prescott has grown up in an East Coast city with her aunt Cora and her grandfather James. After Lucky lets a flying squirrel loose in the house and wrecks her grandfather's campaign party, Cora takes her west for the summer, to the town of Miradero, where her father Jim lives; Lucky has not known him. On the train she catches sight of a wild kiger mustang and his herd. In Miradero she makes friends with Pru Granger and Abigail Stone, and finds the same mustang penned in a corral, where a wrangler named Hendricks is mistreating him. Jim, after the death of Lucky's mother Milagro in a fall from a horse, does not want his daughter near horses.

- Amie Doherty replaced Hans Zimmer, who had scored Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, as composer, and became the first woman to compose a DreamWorks film.
- With a $30 million budget and a worldwide gross of over $42 million, Spirit Untamed became DreamWorks Animation's cheapest and lowest-grossing film to date.
- The film is dedicated to Kelly Asbury, the co-director of the original Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, who died on June 26, 2020.
- Its look mixes 3D with the hand-painted style of Spirit Riding Free, and its roughly 1,300 shots used 2D drawings to build 3D maquettes, some supplied by DreamWorks.
