Biography

Farley Granger was an American actor who began his career after a Samuel Goldwyn talent scout saw him in a small Hollywood stage show and cast him in The North Star (1943). Born in San Jose, California, he followed his first film with the wartime drama The Purple Heart (1944) before joining the Navy, where he helped arrange entertainment for troops in the Pacific. Alfred Hitchcock then cast him in Rope (1948), which brought him strong reviews, and in Strangers on a Train (1951), the box office hit he called his happiest filmmaking experience. He also appeared in Senso (1954) and the Spaghetti Western They Call Me Trinity (1970), and he worked in television and on Broadway in plays such as The Seagull, The Crucible, The Glass Menagerie, and Deathtrap. In 1986 he won an Obie Award for his performance in Lanford Wilson's Talley & Son, and he was interviewed for the documentary The Celluloid Closet (1995).
